Reasons for Using MMD Equipment

CC Site IconBefore jumping into the reasons for using MMD equipment, it must first be defined. MMD equipment, or Meter Mix Dispensing equipment, enables bulk container usage within the process of dispensing adhesives. MMD equipment is usually manufactured and dedicated to a specific volume mix ratio, allowing coverage anywhere from 1:1 volume to 22:1 by volume. MMD equipment can be handled by an operator manually if necessary; in contrast, it can also be set up to run semi-automatically or fully automatically, thus allowing the equipment to be supplied with the appropriate functionality via robotic operations. Knowing this ahead of time can save costs as your production increases.

What is meter mixing? Meter mixing is the process of mixing two part materials of different viscosities and the control rate of flow and ratio characteristics during the dispensing process.  Some range from floor to table top models being automated to delivering shots of low to medium viscosity fluids due to single acting reciprocating pistons.

So now that you have a general understanding of MMD equipment, what are your reasons for using it?

  • Increase your cost savings
    • As with most things, buying in bulk can cost less according to the volume you are buying. You can save more buying bulk rather than buying single cartridges.
  • Waste reduction
    • Going hand-in-hand with saving from buying bulk cartridges, you can also cut back on waste production that would occur with purchasing individual cartridges.
  • Accurate and consistent mixing
    • A high-quality piece of MMD equipment gives the capability of maintaining a mix ratio that falls within +/- 5% via weight and consistency, thus providing a high level of accuracy shot after shot.
  • Increased volume production
    • MMD equipment has the ability to dispense the adhesives at rates that will approach a kilogram per minute, all while maintaining the accuracy and rate of production.
  • Highly repetitive shot volumes (automation)
    • This will remove the variations involved in the process that is introduced by human operators.
  • Easy mixing and dispensing
    • High viscosity adhesives can be very difficult to hand mix or dispense from the cartridges.

The type of Meter Mix Dispensing equipment unit for a project is selected based on the type of adhesive that is being used for the application and the anticipated production volumes needed. In order to select the right piece of MMD equipment, you must first need to know the details of the manufacturing process as well as any possible future needs you may have.

So, what are the types of MMD equipment?  There are commonly known to be 5 different types:

  • Rod Meter or Piston Meter
  • Progressive Cavity Meter
  • Double Acting Piston Pump or Proportioner
  • Gear Meter
  • Geotor

Later this week, we will define these 5 different types of MMD equipment.
