Acrylic Adhesives

lord 403/19Acrylic adhesives are a resin-based adhesive that is comprised of methyacrylic polymer which needs a catalyst to cure. This type of adhesive is characterized by having a strong bond to a multitude of substrates, withstanding fluctuations in temperatures ranging from-40°F to 400◦F, resistant to sunlight and solvents that will not exhaust the bond strength on joints.

Acrylic adhesives excel in securing unprepared metals, thermoplastics and composites because of the adhesives strength measured in two ways; cohesion and adhesion. Cohesion measures the ability of the adhesive being able to stick to itself, while adhesion is based on cure time, temperature and viscosity.

Generally, acrylics are easily dispensed and usually come in cartridges. Curing occurs at room temperature and depending on the viscosity the adhesive will exotherm. Exotherm is when the adhesive creates heat and a color change as a visual indication that the material is curing and will rapidly reach handling strength. To extend curing time, can be achieved by lowering temperature in an area.

    • Glass bead technology enables the ability to create the optimum bond line thickness
    • It will maintain strength and adhesion after the long-term exposure to various environments, such as humidity, chemical subjections, fog, and thermal cycling
    • An acrylic adhesive is designed to adhere to a vast array of metals and composites with minimal or no preparation of the surface
  • There are two components or “parts”:
    • The A side, which is acrylic
    • The B side, which is the accelerator
  • It will have two uncured properties:
    • The odor
    • It will have a creamy, pasty consistency
  • Cured properties:
    • Doesn’t bond well to surfaces that are porous (O2 inhibition)
    • It can withstand temperatures of up to 300°F (150°C), although this will vary and depend on the product
    • It has excellent impact, peel, and shear strengths
    • Outstanding adhesion to unprepared or barely prepared metals, composites, or thermoplastics
  • Application properties:
    • Cure can be accelerated with average amount of heat (<140°F, 70°C)
    • Cure will very quickly handle strength and full cure at the room temperature
    • Insensitive to minor discrepancies in the mix ratio
    • Acrylic adhesives can be used with a diverse number of accelerators (curatives)
      • This affects the mix ratio, color changing, application method and the viscosity
    • It has a wide range of open times, from a few minutes all the way up to just under an hour
