Abrasive Types
If you’re looking for something to clean, shape, cut, or machine your different materials such as metal, glass, cement, and wood, we have the perfect choice for your project. Our selection from our friends at sia Abrasives features several different types of abrasives you can choose from, depending on the type of project you need them for. This blog will break down the different options and explain the differences in each selection.
- Bonded Abrasives – This type of abrasive is typically a precision cutting disc that is good for metalworking. Bonded abrasives need to be cleaned up after use and this can be performed by cleaning off the waste, exposing fresh grit on the abrasive, and ensuring the original shape is maintained so you don’t end up with problems such as uneven abrasion.
- Coated Abrasives – Coated abrasives are the classic flexible abrasives and systems you often see on sanders or for hand-sanding projects with sandpaper. These are composed of a paper, cloth, fiber, or film backing that is attached to some kind of abrasive, be it natural or synthetic.
- Foam Abrasives – As the name suggests, these abrasives are foam pads of all shapes, sizes, and hardness. These foam blocks are excellent for finishing wood, paints, coatings or fillers.
- Microabrasives – These abrasives are created with a special polyester film which gives it a defined surface structure. If you work in the printing, graphics or auto industry, this would be the perfect type of abrasive for your project.
- Nonwoven Abrasives – If cleaning, polishing, finishing or preparing your metal surface is your goal, then you’ll probably want to go with one of the nonwoven abrasive options. These are made of nylon fibers mixed with abrasive grain and resin.
We hope choosing the proper abrasive for your next project is now a simple choice. However, if you need help selecting the right one, or have any other questions or concerns, be sure to contact us and we’ll be glad to help!
