Seeing Is Believing – New Videos Showing Off the Strength of Our Polyolefin Bonder with King StarBoard
If you’re looking for a standard adhesive to work with the popular King StarBoard®, you’re probably frustrated by now. Old posts on online forums offer you little hope except to bust out the metal screws or develop an unlikely contraption.
Thankfully, Chemical Concepts offers a tough and proven solution to this problem – Chem-Set 6105 is your answer for an adhesive to use with King StarBoard and other HDPE’s (high density polyethelene).
If seeing is believing, we urge you to take a look at these three videos showing the strength and staying power of Chem-Set 6105 on King StarBoard. Andrew, one of our adhesive specialists, shows no mercy in testing the strength of Chem-Set 6105 as an adhesive.
Bonding disks adhered with Chem-Set 6105 with a pull testing machine to show exactly how much strength it takes to break the bond.
The first test compares a standard epoxy (our Chem-Set 633) glue with bonding disk on StarBoard. The pull test went to .8 kN – about 179 pounds. Next, the video portrays a test with Chem-Set 6105 on the bonding disk. The strength of the adhesion on the StarBoard more than doubled – it went to 1.9 kN – nearly 500 pounds. Plus it’s obvious that the adhesive etched into the StarBoard, giving visual evidence of the strength. Another test (done off-camera in our lab) went all the way to 2.5 kN, more than 550 pounds.
Additionally, the video shows a drop test and a hammer test on a butt-joint with a very small bond line. This type of joint is inherently weak, but it’s a good way to show off the strength of our product. Take a look and see just how much effort it took to break that weak joint. Pretty amazing!
Filmed in answer to a client question, Andrew demonstrates the incredible adhesive properties with Chem-Set 6105 between a solid surface and King StarBoard. Clearly with the vice and the pounding of the hammer, you see the solid surface start to crumble and fly….but you don’t see the adhesive breaking.
Finally, in answer to a question about whether the Chem-Set 6105 adhesive can be peeled off, Andrew tries to scrape the product off of King StarBoard…and shows the staying power of just a bead of Chem-Set 6105. It also shows a drop test, and a test with T-joint or a butt joint that shows the adhesive with a relatively small bonding area. But that T-joint bond survives Andrew jumping up and down on it.
More About the Adhesive
Chem-Set 6105 bonds polypropylene, polyethelene, and even Teflon. Chem-Set 6105 is a 2-part, 1:1 toughened acrylic adhesive. It has been developed to bond low surface energy plastics such as polypropylene and polyethylene (including King StarBoard) – with no primer or surface treatment required. It can also be used to bond a wide variety of other materials such as metals and composite materials and is ideal for bonding dissimilar surfaces.
The features and benefits include:
- Adhesion to a wide variety of substrates.
- Full cure at room temperature.
- Bonds polyolefins.
- No primer required.
- Good impact strength.
- Good chemical resistance.
We conducted these tests on King StarBoard®, which is a special, high-density polyethylene sheet that provides an extremely tough surface, which typically lasts a lifetime. It is environmentally stabilized to endure the harshest outdoor conditions. King StarBoard has been a long-time favorite in the marine world, but it’s also quickly becoming a go-to for use in indoor-outdoor cabinetry…especially in high-end outdoor kitchens. As these types of HDPE’s grow in popularity, contractors and experts alike are singing the praise of our Chem-Set 6105 adhesive, because it’s doing what few other adhesives on the market can claim – it’s creating durable and extremely strong joints for solid surfaces and this popular all-weather material.
