Identifying and Fixing Pool and Spa Leaks
Reading Time: 3 minutes
As we venture into pool season, it’s suiting to cover the almost inevitable byproduct of owning a pool, spa, or landscape pond – LEAKS. Leaks are quite common especially if your pool or spa is older, but there are steps that you can take to identify a possible leak, and address it as soon as the problem arises. Finding and correcting your pool leak sooner rather than later will potentially save you a lot of money in the long run.
Identifying a leak in your pool, spa, or pond
Aside from having a hunch, there are several ways to spot a potential leak in your pool. If you anticipate that you may have a leak, the most obvious thing to track is the water level, and a simple but effective tip for tracking water level is to mark the current level (with a piece of tape or something similar) and observe any change. Below are some specific ways to spot a leak.
- If the water level is dropping at a faster pace than would be caused by splashing or evaporation
- If your water bill is markedly higher – this may indicate a leak if you have an automatic fill device
- If more chemicals are being exhausted to achieve balance in your pool or spa
- If there is algae build-up
- If there are wet or soggy sections of grass near your pool
- If there are cracks or settling to your deck or pool – this would point to underground leaks
The risks associated with unattended leaks are several-fold, but they all point back to the cost associated with making things right in the end. Many gallons of water can be lost if you have a leak and fail to fix it, plus serious structural and mechanical issues can arise if things go unnoticed.
